FuneralCompare (“we”, “our”, “us”) operates the website at funeralcompare.org. We provide a price comparison service for UK funeral services using CMA-mandated Standardised Price List data.

2. What Data We Collect

2.1 Information you give us

  • Enquiry form: Your name, email address, phone number, and postcode when you submit an enquiry to a funeral director.
  • Account registration: Name, email address, and password (hashed) when you create a consumer or provider account.
  • Price alerts: Email address when you subscribe to price change notifications.
  • Reviews: Your name (or chosen display name), rating, and review text when you submit a review.
  • Provider registration: Business details, contact information, and uploaded pricing documents.
  • Payment information: If you purchase a premium subscription, payment details are processed by Stripe — we never store your full card details.

2.2 Information we collect automatically

  • Usage data: Pages visited, search queries, time spent on site, referring website, and browser type.
  • Device information: IP address, operating system, and device type.

3. How We Use Your Data

We use your personal data for the following purposes:

  • To provide and maintain our price comparison service.
  • To forward your enquiry to the funeral director(s) you select.
  • To send you price change alerts you have subscribed to.

  • To process premium subscription payments via Stripe.
  • To improve our website and user experience.

Our lawful bases for processing are: consent (for marketing and cookies), contract (for providing our service), and legitimate interests (for improving our service and preventing fraud).

We share your data only in the following circumstances:

  • Funeral directors: When you submit an enquiry, your contact details are shared with the funeral director(s) you select so they can respond.
  • Service providers: We use third-party services for hosting (Vercel/Cloudflare), payments (Stripe), email (SMTP), and analytics. These providers process data only on our instructions.
  • Legal compliance: We may disclose data if required by law or to protect our legal rights.

We never sell your personal data to third parties.

5. Data Retention

We retain your personal data only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy:

  • Account data: Retained until you delete your account.
  • Enquiry data: Retained for 2 years after the enquiry.
  • Price alert emails: Retained until you unsubscribe.
  • Analytics data: Retained for 26 months.
