Average Cost of a Funeral in the UK in 2026

How much does a funeral cost in the UK in 2026? We analyse real CMA-standardised pricing data from 128 funeral directors across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland to give you the real figures.

Planning a funeral is one of the most difficult financial decisions a family will face. Unlike most major purchases, it often comes with little warning and limited time to shop around.

What Does the Average Funeral Cost in 2026?

According to FuneralCompare's live pricing data from 128 UK funeral directors with CMA-standardised pricing, the average cost of an attended funeral in 2026 is £3,086. Unattended cremations — the simplest and most affordable option — average £1,095, though prices vary depending on the provider and region.

What's Included in the CMA Attended Funeral Basket?

Since 2021, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) requires all UK funeral directors to publish a Standardised Price List showing the cost of six mandatory items for an attended funeral:

1. Legal and administrative arrangements — £395 – £1,250 depending on provider

2. Collecting and transporting the deceased — £150 – £395

3. Care of the deceased in appropriate facilities — £175 – £450

4. Providing a suitable coffin — £225 – £795

5. Viewing of the deceased — £0 – £200 (free at some providers)

6. Hearse to cemetery or crematorium — £195 – £450

Regional Differences in Funeral Costs

Funeral costs vary significantly by region. Here's what the data shows:

England: £2,395 – £4,795 (average £3,125)

Scotland: £2,495 – £3,941 (average £3,087)

Wales: £2,145 – £3,166 (average £2,629)

Northern Ireland: £2,645 – £2,823 (average £2,734)

Why Prices Vary Between Funeral Directors

You might wonder why two funeral directors in the same city can charge very different prices. The main factors include:

  • Location — City centre funeral directors typically have higher overheads
  • Facilities — Providers with dedicated chapels of rest and viewing rooms charge more
  • National chains vs independents — Chains like Co-op and Dignity have centralised pricing, while independents set their own rates
  • Service level — Some providers include items (like minister fees or death certificates) that others charge separately for

How to Save on Funeral Costs

The data shows significant savings are possible:

  • Compare providers — The cheapest attended funeral in our database costs £1,495, while the most expensive is £4,795 — a difference of £3,300 for the same CMA-standardised basket of services
  • Consider direct cremation — Unattended cremations cost a fraction of attended funerals, averaging just £1,095
  • Check local independents — They're often more affordable than national chains
